What Slopfriends keeps about you, why, for how long, and how to turn it off.
On this site
The site counts the pages you open and the buttons and links you click, under an anonymous id it keeps in your browser. A field counts only as typed in; what you type in it is never sent. Your first visit in a tab also says where you came from: the UTM tags and any ad click id in the link, the page that linked here and the page you landed on. It says what you browse with too: screen size, language, time zone, browser, operating system and whether it is a phone. While you are signed in, these count toward your account. The site keeps no IP address or location with them.
A download of the app is counted. With usage stats on, it carries your anonymous id, so the app it installs can be linked to the visit it came from.
In the app
The app counts the screens you open, the buttons you press, the keys you use (by what they do, never what you type), when it opens and closes, the worlds you host and join and for how long, playtests, sign-ins, the built-in agent's turns with their model and cost, and how long hosting, downloads and loading take. Once a run it notes your computer: operating system and version, processor and number of cores, memory, graphics card, screen size, language and time zone. All of it goes under an id for the app on your computer, and counts toward your account while you are signed in.
For each run of the app it keeps your public IP address and the place that address points to: country, region, city, network provider, and coordinates rounded to about 10 km. A few seconds into each world it times the round trip to the relay the world goes through and to Community.
How long it is kept
- Your IP address: 30 days, then it is deleted.
- The place: country, region, city, network and coordinates at about 10 km: 180 days.
- Clicks, screens and the rest of the usage stats: 180 days. After that only daily counts of each are kept: the site's for everyone together, the app's for each install of it. An install also keeps the last computer details it sent.
- Where a site visitor came from and what they browse with: 180 days after their last visit, or longer if that visit is linked to an account or an install of the app.
Why
To see which parts of Slopfriends people use and where they get stuck, to find what is slow or broken, to learn which links bring people here, and to decide where new relays would make games faster for the most players.
Turning it off
On this site, choose Turn off in the note in the corner, or here. The choice is kept in this browser: from then on the site sends no usage stats and keeps no anonymous id.
In the app, turn off Settings › General › Usage stats, or choose Turn off in the note on its start screen. The app then sends no usage stats, no IP address or place and no round-trip times.
What is sent either way
Some things are sent with usage stats off, because the app needs them or because they are how we fix it: error reports from the site and the app, and the app's crash reports; time played in a world, which counts toward that world's hours played; the built-in agent's conversations, with keys and tokens taken out, to improve it; and your account, if you make one: email, username and the IP addresses you signed in from, which protect your sign-ins, kept until you delete the account.
